KING OF BARKUS XXI Jacques

Jacques Miller Wallis will be 5 in January. His proud parents are Virginia Miller and
Bruce Wallis (although Jacques sometimes assumes it's the other way around...).

He was born in Pennsylvania but always knew he had to be in New Orleans.

Vizslas are a very old Hungarian hunting breed, and Jacques is no
exception. He loves to find quail.

Other activities he loves: mountain climbing in the Adirondacks, crawfishing in Mississippi, running with other dogs, and socializing generally.

He is regal one moment and an incredible goofball the next. He is
not beyond striking very inelegant poses if they result in a butt scratch.

We call him yoga dog because of the contortions he gets himself
into that he seems to be perfectly comfortable with.

Proof that he is a New Orleanian: he loves jazz (Ellis Marsalis and
Miles Davis particularly). While he's not food obsessed he does love crab, oysters, and other New Orleans delicacies, as well as having a well rounded palate generally (loved papaya at a young age, for example). Also, he has (outdoor) tables at several fine
restaurants: Coquette and Patois among them.

He goes to work every day! And he typically has one or more canine
playmates at the office. (Beuerman Miller Fitzgerald, or BMF, on Magazine street downtown)

He has more aunts and uncles than anyone I know (all human).

Never met a person, dog or lizard he didn't at least try to make
friends with (it doesn't always work out)!

On the not so great/perplexing side: he seems to disapprove of
dancing. All dancing - even our UPS man, who has major rhythm, gets barked at if he tries!

He has two sisters: a 19 year old cat named Cleo and a 6 year old
donkey named Tula.

He was one of the Windsor Court's 140 New Orleans Characters (we hear he made the top 20!) and the two statues in the entryway of the hotel are clearly Vizslas

He has his own Facebook page and his own email address: jacques@e-bmf.com - Jacque says Goodnight to his pals the valets and Rick the security director at Commanders Palace every night!

Royal Ball Parade Information:

The 2013 Parade starts promptly at 2pm and proceeds through the Vieux Carré, stopping at the VIP Reviewing Stand at Good Friends Bar, corner Dauphine and St. Ann, where VIPs (and those who desire to be VIPs) will toast the Royal Court.

The Pawty (before, during after parade) in Armstrong Park is open to all at no charge to hear the music and see the sights! Edibles and potables available. Armstrong Park opens to all at 10:30am and is the staging area for the parade participants.

Membership in the parade krewe is open to all dogs - regardless of their past. Pre-registration (membership dues parade pass) is $30 until January 15, $40 until Jan. 23 (PLEASE NOTE: Online/fax registration ends at midnight CST, Wednesday, January 23!). Day-of-parade registration (Jan. 27) at Armstrong Park is $50. Registration includes one dog and one human escort. Additional human escort passes can be purchased for $8 each online or the day of the parade. Only dogs who are registered krewe members with parade tags will be allowed to be part of the parade. Check out our Membership Page to see esteemed levels of registration/membership.

If you are not parading this year, but still wish to support our doggone good cause, you can become a krewe member for $20. Krewe members receive all mailings of the Krewe for one year.

The Barkus Royal Ball (humans only): Our black-tie optional, costume-encouraged event will take place at The Windsor Court Hotel, New Orleans (300 Gravier) from 8pm to midnight, on Friday, January 25, 2013. Individual tickets are $125 each and include cocktails, fabulous edibles, and entertainment. Tables of 10 are $1500, include reserved seating, cocktails, fabulous edibles, entertainment, four passes to VIP reviewing stand day-of-parade (12noon-5pm), four passes to the Whitney VIP tent at Orleans N. Rampart (10:30am-2pm); two signed numbered limited edition Barkus posters by Matt Rinard; and two official Krewe of Barkus T-shirts.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Could you give us at least four community service hours? Our parade is only possible through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who set up the park, man our booths and act as Krewe Marshalls in the parade. Shifts are available: 8am-12noon setup check-in; 10-2pm booth staffing; 1pm-5pm booth staffing and krewe marshalls. If you can volunteer, please send your name, address, phone (day and evening), via email to
barkusparade@aol.com (mailto:barkusparade@aol.com?subject=VOLUNTEER), put VOLUNTEER in the subject line. Our volunteer coordinator will be in touch with you. Click on the Volunteers Bone at the top of the page for more details.
